A Rock Star

Years ago when my new brother-in-law made a new leaf for the kitchen table I thought he was a rock star.
A rock star!
Well guess who is a rock star now?
I moved the secretary to the dining room just to stick it somewhere.

It looked too crowded so I dragged the dining table into the  kitchen and I put the kitchen table in the dining room. The table looked a little small but it looked like it had leaves at some point.

I decided to get down underneath it to check.
Sure enough it had these window latch looking things but when I tried to turn them, nothing happened.
At some point someone had turned them a different way and permanently affixed them to the table to give it more stability.
I couldn't get them unscrewed with the drill driver.
Bill wasn't home and I couldn't find another type of drill bit so I cut the little thingamabobs apart.
Tin snips come in handy sometimes.
I got my son to hold the other end because the cat refused to help me.

Sure enough the table slid apart.

At this point the angels started singing.
Now I promise you that I thought Bill was going to hail me a genius when he came home.
Nope.
He said "I knew it used to have leaves."
What??
I thought for sure he told me last time we had company that it didn't have leaves.
(I think he didn't want to have to go out to the garage and make a leaf two hours before company came.)
True story!
Scout's honor.

I grabbed a stair tread that my neighbor gave us when she moved. The tread was the correct depth.
I cut it to size,
drilled the holes for the pins and plunked it in place.

I don't want you to think there are random food crumbs.
It's sawdust.
I stained it to match.
Red Mahogony by Minwax and black oil based paint were the best colors.
The table for four is now a table for six and soon to be eight as soon as I get another stair tread.
I love that it matches the chairs so much better.
It also fits better in the room than the old one did.

To get it to seat eight comfortably we bought two more stair treads but cut one in half.

It was perfect for our Easter dinner. We were able to sit seven very comfortably.

This works so much better because it's oval and now
there is walking room around the table.

Making table leaves wasn't rocket science but
figuring this out made me feel like a rock star!

    1. Thanks, Judy. I loved your feature. I teared up when I read about your beloved son. We both have been through the shadows and come out the other side. Have a blessed day.
