Denim and Shabby Classroom

I am totally smitten with denim!
Could it be making a comeback?
Since the denim and yellow phenomenon fizzled out,
denim hasn't been seen much in decorating.
I think when something is so big, it needs a little cooling off period before regaining a semblance of popularity.
In April, Michael's had a darling denim display.
I bought some adorable ribbon without really know what I'd do with it.

I covered some tin cans with it and they became the inspiration for a denim and shabby makeover of my classroom.
I've worked on it sporadically throughout the summer.
I'm finally finished.
As soon as the last little darling gave me a hug goodbye in May, I brought my rescued from the trash 60s office chair home from work to make a slipcover.
I can't believe I didn't do this 10 years ago.
It's so cute that I almost didn't want to take it back to school.

It is such a comfy chair.

The glass broke in this oval frame. I covered the back with burlap and added some white ribbon.

I found the desk during one of the first weekends of summer.
It only needed a coat or two of white paint.

Are you kidding me?
So cute.

The new abc boarder is made from some pennant from Mardel and some chalkboard letters.

Bill changed my life by giving me a masonry drill bit. I can finally drill into the cinderblock wall.
I hung up a white board in my circle time area.

Next up was the curtains. I was completely perplexed by drapes for this room.
The wall color has been nearly impossible to match.
I have tried numerous time over the course of the last four years and wasn't able to find anything.
I made grain sack inspired panels and a drop cloth valance.

After installing the new drop cloth valance, I was still not in love with the bright blue wall.
I spent a Saturday up at the school giving it a navy blue makeover.
I couldn't wait to get pops of white on the dark blue.

The file cabinet got a mini makeover with chalkboard paint and a blue duck tape border.

Please!
I love it.

The little bench got a couple of coats of white and a denim and floral pillow.

The bulletin boards got denim blue wrapping paper and white border. My sister in law bought the wrapping paper for me when we went to Canton.

My growth chart is just two yard sticks from Home Depot.

The chalkboard stuff came from Michael's and First Monday Trade Days.

Bill made the faux window for me about 12 years ago.
It is perfect for my home center.

Kid's art will go on this bulletin board the first day of school.

The school blessing is Currier and Ives.

The cubbies came from Lowes.
I added the blue wrapping paper to the back so it would pop.

I gave up the school sanctioned library shelf in a fit of liberation.
I searched all summer for something and ended up finding it in the garage.

Bill got the crate for me for Christmas one year.
I painted it and added the wheels. It can hold the books and our book characters.
I love, love that it is mobile so they move the library based on what we are doing on any given day.

Now everything matches the blue table and chairs.

I spend a lot of time in this room and I'm thrilled with how it came out!
Teachers report on Thursday.
Open house is next Monday night.
Then it all begins!
I can't wait to meet my new little darlings.
Thanks for stopping by.

  1. How cute! What little child wouldn't want to have you as their teacher? Have a super school year! I did that pleasurable job for 37 years. Every one of those years was a blessing, but I love my retirement! Linda@Wetcreek Blog
