The Gray Coffee Table

Hi friends,
We have been a little in upheaval over here.
I don't want to overshare but you might just say a prayer for us if you think about it.

A friend had this coffee table.
It was a creamy yellow.
Her husband started painting it red and then quit for some reason.

Their fabric has grays and blues with some greener grays.
I really don't like sanding so I decided to paint it with chalk paint.

I popped into the antique mall and picked up a quart of CeCe Caldwell's Chalk Paint in Pittsburg Gray.

It took almost three coats of the chalk paint.

Originally, it was just going to get either a clear wax finish or clear polyurethane.
Neither looked clear.

They made the table look streaky and dirty.

Ace Hardware came to the rescue with a latex satin finish paint in exactly the same color as the chalk paint.
Keep in mind that it needed the chalk paint initially so that this coat would stick.
That is what I kept telling myself that when I felt like the chalk paint was a waste of time.
It wasn't.

I watched some Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel in between coats.
Those movies are almost all the same but I love watching them anyway.

Isn't it a cute table?

I hope they love it.

I love that you stopped by.

  1. Katie- sorry the table took so much work - but you know what would make it look even better? different pull knobs - it needs something interesting - white porcelain, black metal or crystal or yellow or blue or something - just a little new change would make it look even better.

As for my prayers, you got it. Hope all is ok.

  6. Hello dear Katie I am keeping you in prayer. The table looks fabulous. I have yet to try that brand of chalk paint so will give it a go soon. Have a fabulous weekend! I am gearing up to start another semester of school on Monday. :) When you get a moment let's make a day to have lunch so I can return your plate to you.

  8. I like the finish on the table you painted, Katie. I'm like you in that I don't really care for dark finishing waxes over lighter paint. I tried that on one of my tables and it looked dirty to me, too. Did you paint the table for your friends?

  9. Katie, the color turned out great. My dirty little secret is I often waste old chalk paint by using it as a primer below a regular paint for the same reason you stated. works great.
