Removing "Brass" Plating With Oven Cleaner

I showed you the summer decor in our updated bathroom yesterday.

One of the best parts, aside from the beauty of it, is that I no longer have to worry about mold.
The old shower was a leaky mess.
It's not good when mildew keeps rearing it's ugly head after repeated attempts at caulk cleaning have failed.

One of the previous mini updates on this bathroom popped up on my Facebook timeline this morning.
It reminded me of all I went through to update the look of this bathroom without spending a lot of money.

Our house was built in 1990.
If there was a contest among builders to see who could build a house using the cheapest fixtures possible, our house would have won.
:)
Two of the bathrooms had ridiculously cheap faux brass faucets.
The shower surround was faux brass.

I'd read a magazine article about using oven cleaner to strip off the brass plating.
I decided to give it a try.
It took many cans and applications of Easy Off Oven Cleaner but it worked!
I was thrilled.

As I was cleaning up the never ending mess from the shower, I realized that the oven cleaner was removing the finish from the jetted tub faucet.
I decided to go for it and did application after application of Easy Off until all the plating was removed from the faucet.

I still disliked the faucet but it was so much better without the faux brass.
It got us through four more years with this outdated bath.

Thanks for letting me share a snippet of our bathroom's past.

  6. Can you please tell me if you used regular oven cleaner in a can or the liquid kind? What was your method exactly?
