Running With A Mower

When I was a little tyke, I was running with the toy lawn mower.
I fell and it cut my chin. If I tilted my head back, while someone else held the mirror, I could see the scar. I doubt I could find it now with all the chins that I have.
Aging is fun, isn't it?
This scar taught me a couple of lessons.
Toys from the 50s were dangerous and I'm not sure how we survived.
I shouldn't run and mow at the same time.

When Jesus showed himself to the disciples after the resurrection, His scars were proof that
He was who He said He was.
We aren't always afforded a physical manifestation in order to have faith but in this case, God provided it.

The disciples eyes were opened and they believed.
The scars in His hands, feet, and side were the physical representation of the pain He experienced.

I have other scars.
I don't remember the pain of the mower incident but I do remember the pain involved in the acquisition of some of my other scars.

Sometimes the pain was just physical but sometimes the scar is a representation of stress or emotional pain.

There are times that scars are emotional and not physical.

These are tough to deal with because no one can see these other scars.
They are a silent burden.

Actions can leave scars because we don't live in isolation.
Our actions and choices at times ripple away from us in concentric circles affecting others in the wake.

In Isaiah it was prophesied,
"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." Isaiah 53:5 NIV

But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. ESV

In the case of our Lord, those scars remind us of His sacrifice and chastisment.
He wore the crown of thorns reserved for me.
He took the whipping I deserve.
His hands and feet bore the nails that should have been mine.
He took consequences that should have been my punishment.

His scars bring healing.
My old scars remind me that healing took place.
They are a mere snapshot of a past wound.
I can look at them, however, and be reminded that He bore scars on my behalf.
The scars He endured on His journey toward death on the cross became life for me.

Life today and life for eternity.
