Bathroom Remodel After Five Years/ Potty Closet

What a pain in the neck.
I mean - literally.

When we did our big bathroom remodel, I got very lazy and didn't want to go to the store to buy more paint.
When painting the potty closet, I should have used the same paint that we used in the bathroom but I was worried I wouldn't have enough so I grabbed a can that we already had.
It was a very olive greenish gray.
Here is how it looked in the bathroom with natural light.

So pretty. I loved that color.
It was a perfect gray. I needed to make a few touch ups so I went to Sherwin Williams to get another can. The new can was not the same. It looked more green.
It looked especially olive green in the potty closet.
It didn't coordinate with the bathroom at all and I hated it so I never took a picture of it.
Repainting the potty closet has been on my list for the last 5 years.

The wall cabinet got some new accessories.

The trim was finally finished properly. I didn't finish it five years ago.

I reused our existing wall art.

I did a Vaseline treatment on it. Before it was cream and aqua.
I painted some Navy blue areas and then I let it dry.
I coated petroleum jelly on it and then painted the white.
The white didn't stick to the petroleum jelly so it created this "chippy" effect.
This technique isn't new to me but it's the first time I've tried it and it worked great.

Notice how I folded the toilet paper for your viewing pleasure!

I guess I hurt my neck by looking up at the ceiling when I was painting it.
It took almost a month for it to finally feeling better.
I guess ceiling painting it out for me in the future. Whoo hoo.
Thanks for letting me share. I know this was probably a boring post but I feel like paint makes such a difference.
This room is so much cleaner and brighter.
Paint is a small change but an important one.

Upstairs Guest Bathroom

It's black.
Rebekah was a teenager when we painted the vanity area of her bathroom.
Actually, it was Jonnie's bathroom too, but it is just off of her room.
It made sense to paint it to match her decor.
When he moved out we painted the vanity white and added these fun old gilt mirrors.
I've been holding off showing it to you because we need to make a change.
Our old plumber came to unclog the drain. (He has been replaced.)
Well, he broke the drain in the bottom of the sink and just left it. I think he was hoping we wouldn't notice.
Bill tried to hook it back up but the old cultured marble sink is worn so he couldn't reattach it underneath.

We were going to order a quartz counter for this vanity but decided not to since we have to have our bathroom completely redone. It was going to be a shocking amount of money for one bathroom countertop. I'd much rather put that money in the bathroom that we use everyday.
Instead we are doing a complete DIY. I hope it will be cute and charming.
But I'm not sure the black walls will stay.
I'm actually thinking about beadboard wainscot walls.
I'm also thinking about a frame for the large mirror.

This room has been black for so long that I'm having trouble visualizing it another way.
It feels old Hollywood glamour to me
and it's last room in the house with such a strong color.
I think I will miss it.
Bill damaged the wall this afternoon when he took out the counter so I will have to do something.
It will have to coordinate with the little potty and tub area.
I'll let you know what I come up with.

P.S. All mirrors were cleaned before taking these photos.
They were all taken pre-blogging days.

Guest Bath Makeover

I shared with you how I have been freshening up our home since all the kids moved out.
I told you about my bathroom update, but I also have been working on an update to the former kid's bath.
I needed to repair a bit of  the tile before I could get to some much needed painting.
I have been a little overwhelmed thinking about this repair. It is the result of years of teenagers showering in this room. The moisture seeped in behind the tile and the wall got mildewed.
This was only a small repair (two tiles) but I needed to replace the nasty sheet rock.
After much thought I decided to put my big girl tool belt on and fix it before my brother and his wife came. I removed three of the tiles. I went up one tile higher than I needed to in order to make sure I got all the ruined sheet rock and so that I had room to stick it in.The tiles popped right off but I was super careful with them because I didn't think I would be able to find replacements for this gray tile after 20 years.
If you need to tackle something like this, clean off the old grout and chalk.
I cut a new piece of sheetrock to the exact width of the old.
I used drywall screws to attach the new drywall.
I used tile adhesive to reattach the tiles. This came in a tub from Lowes. There was no mixing or anything, it was ready to use.
New chalk and grout finished the tile.
To fix the wall I used joint compound.
Mr. Bill bought a brand that goes on pink and turns white when it is dry.
I feel like a preschooler with a brand new glue stick every time  I use it. :)
It is like frosting a cake.
It took a bit to match the existing orange peel texture.
Mr. Bill had a remnant of baseboard to replace a little piece that was rotten.
It was even primed.

I can't  remember the last time I painted in this bathroom.
Umm... When was sage green in vogue?
My old neighbor gave me a can of paint years ago. She was going to use it paint her powder room but found a color she liked better.
It was a pretty color and it held up to three teenagers pretty well.
I found the can under the sink and was surprised to find that it was Color Place by Walmart.
I am impressed.
It lasted 14 years or so.

But it was time for a change and time to lighten up.
This is my huge stack of paint samples. I tried to find a gray in just about every brand.
I love gray for a neutral. I knew gray for this bathroom would be hard because there are no windows. I wanted to avoid a gray that would read blue in a dark space.
(Bill's office reads blue.)
In the end I just grabbed one.
Good news it doesn't read blue, but  it reads a little green.
It's not exactly what I wanted but it looks lovely.
A very soft greenish and in some lights aqua.
It could be that my eyes see green because of the green room next door.
I used a paint and primer and gave it three coats so I doubt it is picking up the green of the old color.
It only took about an hour to paint this tiny area.
I love the little chair to hold a towel.
I have had this chair my whole life. Each of my brothers and I had one.
It goes to a little tea party table. The whole set was destined for the church rummage sale when I was a teenager, but I couldn't let it go, so I brought it home and we stuck it in storage until I had my own children.

This watercolor picture was a wedding gift from one of my oldest, dearest friends, Carol. It was in a very groovy frame and for some reason I could never envision it in a new frame.

I found this frame and shmooked a little gray paint on it.
I rubbed the paint on and wiped it off to let the gold underneath still show. I am sure others call this dry brushing. ;)

I have such happy memories looking at this painting.
This was our first piece of original art.

The black and white checked floor was my second tiling job.

The small tiles were perfect for a novice. They were easy to cut. I even did it with a tile snip.
It goes well with the black walls in the sink area.
This area is about to get a new counter so I will save that reveal for another day.

The light fixture was rusted from many steamy showers.

I had to break off the metal holding it on.

This vintage cutie was $3.00 at the thrift.

One more look at the after of the damaged wall.

I was so scared to attempt this repair, but I am excited I did it.
I kind of thought this was beyond my skills.
I hope you will give something like this a try. It wasn't as hard as I made it out to be.
Sprinkled with gray/green,

Classic Blue and White

I thought by now I would get to re-tile the blue shower in the guest bath downstairs.

I don't know what she was thinking when the previous owner picked it out. It was already dated by the time they built the house.

I've tried talking Bill into re-tiling it ourselves but he wants nothing to do with it.
After all, we were able tile 500 square feet on our ground floor.
I guess it is an experience he never wants to repeat.
So it is not happening.
When we first moved in the wall paper was an art deco mini print. It wasn't bad it just wasn't me.
I pulled that down and painted the wall gold with the blue.
Once yellow and blue played out I switched to brown and blue. It updated it as much as it could.
Instead of trying to disguise the blue as I have done in the past, I've decided to embrace the blue and add white for a classic scheme.
I love the June issue of Victoria.
Traditionally it is devoted to this classic color scheme.
I ditched the brown shower curtain and got a crisp white one.

I added a blue and white paisley floral valances. I got two at Tuesday Morning. They are by Waverly and were $14.99 each.

I pulled of few pieces of my blue and white china out and put them in my little cabinet.

I put some blue plates and platters on the wall in place of the prints I had.

I had in mind a Coscill type of towel but couldn't find anything on-line.
To make my own, I measured the width of a plain white towel.

I took some of this blue striped fabric and

I pressed and hemmed a quarter inch hem.

I sewed the blue fabric to the towel and added some white rick rack.

It just a little adds a bit of cuteness.
I have enough to make another one.

We took the builder mirror down and put up this antique framed mirror.
An old ripped oil painting used to reside in the frame.
The painting couldn't be saved but the frame got recycled.

I love what I call moldy gold.
It's not the bling from the 90's but old mellow aged gold.

Refreshed and ready for summer.
