Another Slipcover Done

I told you a few months ago that I needed to slipcover our sofa and loveseat.
We got this set at Freed's about 4 years ago.
The fabric reminded me a little of burlap which was all the rage at the time.
It was adorable but it was an utter magnet for dog hair.

This set was supposed to go in the living room but it was just too much furniture.
I moved the loveseat into the sun room.

A quick repose beacons now that the new doors open outward into the room.

Dog hair detracts from the relaxing atmosphere.

I'm thrilled to say that there are no more slipcovers in my immediate future.
I will be back to show off this room with its Christmas decor.
Don't forget about our Cozy At Christmas Blog Tour starting Monday the 5th.
I'll have a list of blog participants this week sometime.
Blessings,
Katie

Dining Chair Makeover

Two years ago, I flip flopped my dining table with the kitchen table.
It dawned on me one day that the black and brown table in the kitchen could pull apart for leaves.
Did I just hear angels singing?

It had been screwed shut by a previous owner to cover up the fact that the leaves were missing.
It wasn't living up to its seating potential.
It can seat eight now that we have made three new leaves for it.

Let's play I Spy the kitty cat.

Unfortunately, the curvy paisley chairs no longer fit at the head and the foot of the table.
They were a little too wide at the seat (a problem I can totally relate to.)
I didn't love them once the walls got a coat of a light gray paint so I took them out of the room.

One was in a closet and one was at a bathroom vanity much to Bill's dismay.
He could forget all about the chairs until it was time for company.
Then wrangling them out of a too narrow door frame renewed his irritation at my tendency to continually move furniture.
It annoyed him to pull our "new" chairs out of hiding.
I decided to leave them in the dining room for the holidays.

One less annoyance in Bill's life.
They have been bugging me and I was itching to give them a makeover.
The brown chenille upholstery felt a little too formal or a little too cowboy - I'm not sure which.
I really want to love formal furnishings but they aren't me.
An opulent style of decorating is gorgeous but most of our stuff is country or cottage.
I did a Pinterest search for French chair makeovers to get confirmation that I'd actually like what was swirling around in my head regarding these chairs.

I'd like to tell you that I went and got French linen or antique grainsacks but I'd be lying.

I used plain old drop cloths from the tablecloth drawer.
They are cheap and simple and they look like well washed linen to me.

Please know, (Bill, if you are reading), I didn't take off the old fabric.
It's under there waiting for my deconstructed, French chair makeover faze to pass.
I did remove the nail head trim but it can go back on as well.

I almost didn't cover the leather (pleather?) seats but in the end decided to because they were horribly scratched.
New chairs + old cat + new puppy = scratches in leather seats.
It also equals an unhappy pet mommy!

These almost went to consignment during their banishment.
In the end, I thought the scratched seats would depreciate their value.

I love the contrast of light and dark in here.

Thanks for stopping in.
I hope this inspires you to makeover a chair that isn't quite you.
Have a blessed day.

How to Decorate with Sweet Things

I can't help it.
I like sweets.
I like to decorate with sweet things without getting a tooth ache.
I was digging through the Christmas stuff trying to get ready for the upcoming season and I found this sweet cow.

She is what's left of an old nativity
I've given the rest of it away but I kept her and a little donkey.
I really thought that she should have a little more exposure than just at the holidays.
She provides a light farmhouse touch.

One sweet little cow.
Cows all over the room would be too much of a good thing.
Just one will do.

One little cow sitting on my favorite book.
One little cow and the last of the summer roses.

They are always so pretty in November.

The Florentine table came from an antique shop for only $15.00.

The French chair in the background got new upholstery.

Just enough sweetness in a room of neutrals and white.
I hope you are having a good evening.

Grain Sack Table Runner

Grain sacks are all over blogland.

You've seen them haven't you?
They are country, nordic or farmhouse.
I browsed the internet looking for one at a decent price. There was one with my initials but at $80.00, I just couldn't do it. It seemed a little pricey.
Actual grain sack aren't very long so it wouldn't have worked for my needs. It seems by now that fabric manufacturers would have caught on to this motif and started cranking out grain sack inspired fabric but my local Joanns didn't have anything remotely close.

I decided to paint my own.
I apologize that I can't remember where I saw this idea but it isn't original to me.
I taped off my stripes with regular old masking tape and then stenciled on some red craft paint. I used a drop cloth.

The paint was dry in just a few minutes.

It's perfect as a runner on the breakfast room table.

The family wonders "why?" because I pull it off each time we eat.
(Why is a common question around here.)

I didn't use fabric safe paint so it can't be washed.
That wasn't my brightest move but I was impatient and didn't want to go to the store.

It'

It's something different and simple for spring.

I love it with the red transferware.

I need to paint some more to use for pillows.
Have a happy Saturday!

This didn't fair well in the washing machine.
I recommend taking it off before someone eating.

Drop Cloth Settee

It was drizzling and misty. I was glad I had a van.
A curbside rescue!

When my work day ended, I got in the car and it reeked - musty, cigarette smokey yuck.
I came home and immediately started ripping off the upholstery. The poor thing almost ended up back in our trash but it had such cute lines. I decided to wait it out to see what would happen.
It sat in the garage for a while until all the fumes were out of it. The smell had not permeated the wood, only the upholstery. The wood got a once over with cleaning solution.

A soft brown chenille was an almost perfect match for our existing sofa at the time.

It was around $200.00 for fabric and supplies which was a bit pricey.
When we moved it into the garden room it taunted me.
It needed to be lightened up.
I recovered it last winter with painter's drop cloths from Lowes. Drop cloth canvas is economical and durable.

I knew as soon as I was finished that it needed a coat of paint to feel "sunroomy".
It was a perfect job for the long evenings I was home alone - those lost months following the death of my brother- when Bill was traveling for his old job.

It looks exactly how I thought it should.

Why did take me almost a year?
I think long and hard about which pieces to paint.

I've stripped "antiquing" off of some furniture in my time and I don't want to have to do that again.

I paint with the understanding that when this
painted furniture craze is over that some of my pieces will be given away. I only paint the "not too precious".

That being said, I haven't regretted painting anything.
In fact I wish that this style had started before I gave some other cute stuff away. I keep thinking that I'm nearing the end of what I want to see with a coat of white but the paint brings out lines, curves and detail not seen with stain.
I'm falling in love with my furniture again.
I have some more to show!
