Easing Into Fall

I was ready to make a few changes for early fall.
I've told you before that I'm not a huge fan of orange so all the orange grates on my nerves by the time Christmas rolls around.

My ferns and bugs are all put away and the apple tote is sitting in the dining room.
I meant to get after it but it's been a slow process because I've been sick.
Who coined the phrase "It's just a cold"? Eleven days and I'm still sniffling and coughing. It's been pretty miserable except for the day when I accidentally took 1 tablespoon of cough medicine with codeine instead of 1 teaspoon. Sick people can't be trusted to read labels.
I haven't felt that good since I had all my girly parts removed.

I made a wreath for the front door using what I already had.
I've sort of made it my mission not to add to my fall stash of stuff.
The burlap gingham ribbon is from Hobby Lobby last fall.
It is so cute! I had to dig in the Christmas box under the stairs to get it but...
The little bird is from the Christmas aisle at Michaels a few years ago.
Christmas stuff is good for fall too.

Our Halloween kitty is ready for his favorite time of year.

I did the vignette on the washstand a few months ago after our trip to Arkansas.
We found a few more bottles up there at a cute little antique mall.
I put a faux apple on the books because Bill keeps eating my real ones. :)

The mantel got the end of an old apple crate and a ceramic apple. The yellow flowers will dry perfectly and should last for the whole season.

The biggest change came in the kitchen. I pulled down the red transferware and put up the brown. It wasn't doing anything for me. I really wondered if I should just fill these nooks with white to match all the white on the other side of the kitchen.
That seemed a little boring. I rounded up my few remaining pieces of black transferware and I love it.

I'm wild about it with the chandelier.

A quick trip to one of my favorite antique malls yielded the little French bottle. The tag said it was a flower vase but it's not. It's a mustard condiment jar. I'm so smitten with it.
I'm shocked too because we don't get too many French antiques around here.

The little creamer with the black band came from the same antique mall.

The hand towel is from Pottery Barn.

I love the black with the pop of the deep red apple.
This will be a fun color scheme for Halloween. I'll be able to tolerate a little orange by then.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by. I am always amazed that you do.

Thank you!

  1. I love your fall decor...just enough to show the change in seasons. I like how you put a single red apple in your vignettes...so cute. And the wreath on the front door is so pretty. I'm doing very nontraditional decorating for fall this year...some may not even thing it looks like fall. :-)

    1. Thanks, Joanne. We love our door. We replaced our builder basic one about 6 years ago.

  3. I love the black and white transferware in your cabinets, Katie! I can just see the black crows coming out at Halloween! Unlike you, I LOVE orange! I love to wear it and my house seems to come alive with orange accents. I hope to unpack my autumn "junk" this week, and I've also decided to just use what I have this year. Have a great week!

  5. I'm like you and don't really like orange either. I love the changes you made to your home for Fall. You have the prettiest front door! The decoration you made looks great on it. I really love the way you styled your open cabinets with black and white transferware too. I have that same striped tea towel from Pottery Barn. What an amazing find on that little mustard pot. Wish I would find one at a good price.

  8. Love your cabinets with all the black transferware and the white, so classy...........
I only like earth tone colors this time of the year, and I prefer rust over bright orange for sure.
But your choices without orange look great...........
Thanks for sharing this, really enjoyed seeing it.
    Blessings, Nellie
