Bill finally agreed to having the kitchen cabinets painted.
Then he wanted to know how much. :/
The painters had already primed so it was too late for that.
:)
I told you about my experience with having them done professionally.
Read about it here.
I have also painted cabinets myself--4 times.
It was not fun at all.
I sort of said I would never do it again after the last time.
Which is why I lived with the oak longer than I wanted to.
I am not as young as I used to be and I knew that it would take me weeks. I was sure I would have paint in my hair.
Here is the deal.
If you have read this blog at all, you know that I am a do it yourself kind of girl.
But...
sometimes it is good to know when you can't do something.
It was worth it just to fork over some cash and let someone else deal with the mess.
We did this makeover over the course of the last 4 years.
Here is a picture before we did anything.
I tried to make the best of these cabinets and painted the kitchen robin's egg blue.
I actually liked it pretty well until a friend of mine told me that a blue kitchen in un-appetizing.
I was perfectly able to eat in a blue kitchen.
Things started to break and wearing out, so we started working on the kitchen piece by piece.
Here is an approximate break down of the cost.
Counters- $200 Home Depot
Sink $400 Home Depot
Microwave $300 Sears
Stove $800 Sears
Dishwasher $800 Sears
Refrigerator $1200
Table and Chairs $600
Ceiling $1200 (repair damage from water leak, scrape popcorn and paint)
Cabinet painting $1850
Knobs $80
I think this is a very frugal kitchen makeover.
It literally feels like I am standing in a brand new kitchen.
It took time and patience but I think it was worth it.
Suddenly, I feel like having people over again.

Your kitchen is so pretty! It is an amazing transformation. I disagree with your friend though--I think the robins egg blue is a lovely kitchen color. The new neutral color is nice too...you can accent with the blue now. I just love your kitchen. good job!

DeleteWell this is just beautiful! I'm glad you included lots of pictures ... I loved every one of them. The little lamp on the counter is a nice touch, along with the plate racks. The dining table and chairs add warmth to the room. I love your light fixtures and your brown transferware. You really ended up with a fantastic transformation without busting the budget. Great job! I'm your newest follower.
ReplyDeleteThe plate racks are hymnal holders from the backs of pews.
DeleteI found them at some antique stores. Thank you so much for popping by.

ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet, Debra and such a compliment! Thanks.
DeleteWhat a lovely remodel! You did a great job. I've painted cabinets (inside and out) myself and know what a big job it can be. I'm single now and the older I get the less I want to take on major projects all by myself. Thank you for posting the pricing. Congratulations, on your beautiful kitchen!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome, Elizabeth. I know there are many that can't paint cabinets themselves.
DeleteThanks for the kind words.
love it! it's so cheerful...i'll bet you love walking in and seeing this room complete and happy! xoxo, tracie
ReplyDeleteI love coming down in the morning and seeing it. It is so cheerful now.
DeleteYour kitchen turned out so pretty! I love the plates racks you have sprinkled around the room, the pretty dishes, and that little blue lamp over on the side. Your cabinets have new life! You had gread vision.
ReplyDeleteStacey the plate racks are hymnbook holders. I love them in the new kitchen.

ReplyDeleteJacque @theDIYvillage
AMAZING makeover!! You have me scared now though because hubs and I are talking about painting our cabinets ourselves in the kitchen. Ekkkk. Love all your touches and how bright and airy it feels. I truly love the platter holder on the side of your cabinets. I think Imay have to get one of those. Thanx for sharing at THT!
ReplyDeletePamela you are much younger than I am, so I'm sure you are up for the challenge. There are so many good tutorials out there. I'm sure you will find a great paint. The plate and platter holders are hymnbook racks from the back of pews. I love how they look in the white kitchen.
DeleteWhat a beautiful job!!! Love everything about it - and really love the hymnbook/platter holders - what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Suzan
Thank you, Suzan. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI absolutely love your kitchen makeover. I am hoping to redo our kitchen after the holidays. I have to paint my oak cabinets too. I see you hired someone because you know it's a lot of hard work...yipes, I might have to do that too. I love the way everything came out. Looks really pretty.
ReplyDeleteIt was totally worth it. I could have done it myself, but it would have taken weeks. This was over and done with in two days and was dry about 4 days later.
DeleteWOW this is just gorgeous!!!! I love paint :) Everything is just beautiful! Thanks for linking up, I just shared it on FB :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kristin. I am flattered. :)
DeleteWhat a beautiful kitchen, you must be very proud. It is an amazing transformation. I really love the two open cabinets displaying your plates and things. Enjoy.

Letters from the Shore
Thank you. I took two doors off to make the open shelves.
DeleteIt's beautiful! It hardly looks like the same space. Love the contrast of your beautiful wood table with the white cabinets.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It looks better than I hoped and it has changed how I feel about the space. Thanks for coming by.
DeleteWhat a lovely job! Your kitchen is fabulous, love the undercabinet plate rack!!!
ReplyDeleteThe racks are old hymnbook holders. They make great plate and platter storage. Thanks for stopping in.
DeleteI love what you did, and the details, I think I want your kitchen!
ReplyDeleteJan @ The Pink Geranium
Thank, Jan. I do love it. I needed to fall in love with it again.
DeleteBeautiful! I love the white cabinets and your kitchen decor too. I want my cupboards painted too but haven't talked my husband into it yet!
ReplyDeleteTalking the men into painting wood is the most difficult part. :)
DeleteThanks for stopping by.
I JUST called our painter this morning to have him come give me a quote on painting these awful oak cabinets of mine. I just can't take it anymore. But, I would also need new countertops...floors...appliances... and heck, let's just knock down the wall between the kitchen and the family room while we're at it!
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks incredible! Nice work!!!
Katie @ Something to be Found
I hope you can get yours painted. It was worth every penny.
DeleteThank you for coming by.

DeleteVery pretty! So bright and fresh looking.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Elizabeth. It is so much brighter. I don't know why but no matter how many lights I had, it always felt dark before. Thanks for stopping in.
