Ten on the 10th/Container Garden From A Coffee Table

What?
You read that correctly.

We have turned our old coffee table into planters.
Welcome to Ten on the Tenth.

Stop by and see the rest of the bloggers in the line up this month.

Bill wanted to retire his handmade coffee table and get a cocktail ottoman instead.
The coffee table was designed to look like it had been constructed out of crates. He could never find vintage crates so he built them specifically for the coffee table.

The crates sat on a base with wheels. A top was created to look like an old door.

We loved it. Bill ultimately decided that it was really too high. He could not comfortably prop his feet on it.  We stuck an ottoman in between it and the loveseat.

It was far from ideal.
He was over it and so was I.
He took it apart last spring and we brainstormed about what we could do with the crates.
He constructed them out of cedar so they are suitable for the outdoors.
We decided to turn them into planters.
They were the perfect container for Ten on the 10th.

I drilled holes into the bottom.

River rock went in next.

Dirt and annuals went in last.

It had a little weathering so I went over with some varnish.

The variegated Vinca was transplanted from one of my existing flower pots.
I hope that it will trail over the side once the growing season really begins.

Here is the cost breakdown.
Planter - free
Soil - $3.00
Rocks - free
Flowers $3.94

I love it with our front door.

The grass has really come along in the last year.

The other two planters are on the back deck. We are using them for our tomato plants.
Those planters have wheels so we can move them to the shade during the hot summer.
The wheels were $11.99 which put them above our ten dollar limit but they are still an awesome project.

Bill built our crates out of cedar but they could be built out of pallets.
That is all for now.

  1. Very clever! How perfect that you can move the tomato plants around. I have an old crate that's been looking for a use. Might be growing some herbs in it soon.

  3. This is an absolutely fantastic idea! The boxes were just too pretty to discard and now you have unique planters that would have cost a fortune if you purchased them somewhere.

  10. A great repurpose Katie. I always love to see how people reuse their old stuff and this is such a great idea. The wood on your table is really rich and beautiful and fits in perfectly as a planter. Now that I look at it I have a pair of speakers that have the same wood look. Hmmm...

  12. I'm so envious that you've already planted some annuals! It's been so darn cold here but I think I can safely plant now. Your planter looks great now but it's going to be so awesome when than vinca spills out over the side! So pretty by your front door.
