Sweet And Funny Ringo

Hi, Friends,
I hope you are well.
We are doing okay.

This sweet and funny cat deserves a eulogy, of sorts, because he was so unique. I'm sure everyone thinks that about their beloved pets but Ringo really was special.

I've had cats my whole life. I've had three black cats, two orange kitties, three tabbies
and one black and white cat. The black and white cat, Checkers, was a beautiful cat. Big Foot, an orange cat, had extra toes. Copper, another orange, was fun. He just vanished one day. The tabbies were not my favorite. Their personalities were not as unique and fun as our black cats.

I was too young to remember much about Cinder except that he had a heart attack and died when I was in Kindergarten. We picked up Midnight around my 13th birthday and he saw me through my awkward teenage years and into my roles as wife and mother. He was my cat and he bonded with me above other family members. He was fun and funny too. I vividly remember him standing over my fish tank looking with longing at my goldfish. I think he even yanked him out once. I found the fish in time, fortunately. He would sit in the tank with the Guinea pig but never harmed him. He also had a foray into sobriety after my brother's weed usage may have gotten him high through second hand smoke. It was the 70s. My brothers were naughty.

Ringo was one of our best cats, however. He lived longer than the others, that is for sure. He was 16 years old.

The other day as I was picking up a steroid for the cat, the sales associate asked me if I was a Beatles fan. What? I thought it an odd question until I realized that she was talking about the cat's name. Oh!!!! No, but my daughter was a huge Beatles fan when she brought this cat home to us.

Rebekah found Ringo in a feed store in October of her Junior year. Since it was almost Halloween, she wanted to rescue him because she was afraid some sicko would get him for a twisted Halloween ritual. We had two dogs but I think we were otherwise cat-less.

The kids were older. The dogs required less care. We babied this kitten.
Bill carried it around like an infant. It was fun having a kitten again and Ringo acted like a kitten for a long, long time.

He had cat qualities but he had other traits that seemed more dog- like.
He'd follow us when we walked in the neighborhood. He'd walk three houses, stop, wait for us, cross the street and then resume walking with us as we swung back around up the street.
He'd walk three more houses and then sit and wait for us to return.

He had friends. Many times I'd open the door and he'd be just chillin on the front lawn with another cat.
I can only imagine what went on in the middle of the night since we have had possums and raccoons in the back yard at times.

He never seemed to bond with Dixie.
Dixie's exuberance isn't everyone's cup of tea.

They tolerated each other but Dixie had trust issues. Secretly, I hope they showed a little more affection when I wasn't around.

He always had an air of superiority around her because he could be in the front yard and she couldn't.
She had to be on a leash and he was free to roam.

She was afraid of storms and he faced them without fear.
He had distain for the rest of us that were worried about tornados.

He loved the hot summer.
I had to make him come in when the temps reached 100˚. He loved taking a nap on the warm concrete.

He was my gardening companion.

He loved being in the yard with me.
He was outside trained since we've always had a dog door. He didn't know how to use a litter box which wasn't a problem until Uri hit in February.

Winter was not his favorite season.

He liked our attention but if you pet him one time too many, he might bite your hand.

He was really good at playing "grumpy" cat.

He loved to put his head in old shoes.

He had a bizarre relationship with dirty sponges.

Our daughter went off to college and moved out. We all thought Ringo would be happier staying here with us instead of living in an apartment. He became our empty nest cat.
There is something special about empty nest animals. They fill part of the hole left when the kids are grown.

It became clear about a month ago that he was failing.
It's never an easy decision but our vets were great about trying a few things for Ringo but affirming that it was time to say goodbye.

They took good care of us as we took care of him for the last time.
Pet's lives are just a little too short.

Rest well my little foot warmer and gardening companion.
 We will miss you.

Halloween Tablescape

Hi friends,
I told you that I had a Halloween tablescape for you. We don't do a lot for Halloween.
I was taking pictures of my little Halloween tree and suddenly I was setting the table with black cats to match.

Our black kitty is 14 so we could say that this was a birthday party tablescape for him.

I've heard of people having parties for their pets.
Ringo, our cat was having none of it. To show his disdain he ate too much and threw up in the kitchen.

I started with our black and white striped placemats.
I stitched these up in a hurry last Christmas. They aren't perfect but I love them.
Black plastic chargers from Hobby Lobby were the next element. These were only $1.99 each.
Thrifted White Empress plates by Adams China were layered on next.
I love having white plates because they go with everything.
We got some square black glass plates from Bill's mom. I know nothing about them and hadn't ever seen any like them before.
We have a collection of black and white mugs. I bought these for one of my boys for Christmas one year. When they ended up in my garage, I gained custody of them.

Orange twinkle lights became a table runner. A thrifted candelabra with orange tapers, primitive style black cats, orange striped pumpkins finish it off.

The ornament on the chandelier came from Hobby Lobby.
I repainted his face to make him a little cuter and augmented the ribbons to look more custom.

I found the jack o lantern candy dish years ago at the thrift store. He is one of my favorite Halloween decor items. He is filled with candy which is unfortunate for my  non existent waist line.

The Dept. 56 Halloween house came from our Goodwill a few years ago.

I makes noises in addition to lighting up.
There you have it.
Have a great day.

Black Cat Halloween Tree

Bill bought me a metal Christmas tree a few years ago. I strung it up with some lights and put it on the deck.
The lights eventually burned out and the tree ended up along the side of the house next to the air conditioners. This is usually the last stop before the long walk to the trash pile.
I saw it out there a few weeks ago and I realized that it had the perfect shape and color metal to be a Halloween tree.

I'm not a huge fan of Halloween. I've always been back and forth about participating over the years for spiritual reasons. We do, however, have a lot of neighbor kids that come trick or treating. I thought the tree would be cute when we answer the door.

I love black cats. I've had a black cat almost consistently since I was born. I've heard that all black cats have some Siamese in them which may explain their quirky and fun personalities.
Our current cat, Ringo is no exception.

He loves laying out on the deck in the heat. It's only when the temps get into the 100s that he'll cry uncle and come in but he's very bitter about it. He loves laying on flip flops and other smelly shoes.
He also likes hanging out in the front yard with his friends. Ringo has a cute personality.
Our daughter rescued him from the feed store one Halloween. She was afraid he would be acquired by someone with dark intentions. We got custody of him when she moved out.

My tree celebrates all the black cats I've loved throughout the years.

Years ago, I got a darling cat ornament from one of my students.
He'd be perfect on a Halloween tree along with some vintage inspired ornaments I found years ago.

A handful of ornaments weren't enough to decorate my rescued metal tree.

I decided to make some vintage style ornaments.
The internet yielded some cute cat and Jack O Lantern graphics.
I printed them on the printer that my darling husband keeps well supplied with ink.
We had some chip board for another project. My husband cut it into pieces with his band saw.

The prints needed more so I searched altered art on Pinterest. After an inspiration session, they were decorated them with scrap book paper, ribbon, glitter and found buttons.

The owl on a peat pot is just too adorable.

Cardboard jewelry box lids became dioramas.

An ornament from Hobby Lobby got a new face with paint.

He got some additional ribbon to give him a better look.

I decided to try Sculpey Clay for the first time.

Once the ornament was baked and cooled it also got a vintage inspired face with paint.
That was too fun.
A ribbon knotted and hot glued under his hat was the means to hang him on the tree.

Some wooden tags from Hobby Lobby were further embellished with glitter and ribbon.

I was able to find a lot of cute graphics with cats. A few graphic were just too cute despite the fact that they were missing the feline.

I got some Christmas ornament ideas out of this crafting session.
It's fun and twinkly. I'll be back to share the tablescape.
Have a great day.
