When we first bought our house, I decided to replace light fixtures. At the time bling was the thing and although I didn't hate it, I didn't love it either. It looked too new and unnatural to be real brass. Most of the stuff in my house was plated junk that wouldn't age and patina. I decided to go with antique brass for this house. I love an antique piece that has a natural aged look to it. I found them at thrift shops, garage sales and antique stores for next to nothing. Which was necessary because this house had a lot of ugly, cheap fixtures. My light fixtures were not the typical Williamsburg fixture of the 90's that could be spray painted.
Mine were hideous!
They were very similar to this.

And this.
I lived with my ugly fixture in the dining room for less than a year before I replaced it with this.

It was only $25.00 at the Junior League garage sale.
I was tickled to get it and have loved it for a long, long time.
It didn't come with any crystals. I added them through out the years and attached them all the ways that I could. Hot glue and wire were my methods of choice. I used to be able to find baggies of crystals for about $5.00 a bag. I think people were keeping their old fixtures but taking the sparkle off. The sparkle is the best part!
If you can't find replacement crystals at a junk shop, you can get them at your local home improvement warehouse.

I added the shades and the cord cover which I made with a hot glue gun and some fabric scraps.
It was pretty good for the 90's.
I always felt that I would find my forever chandelier for the dining room. I looked and looked for one like this. It needed to be a little bigger than this one with another teir of lights.
I thought aged brass or bronze was timeless and it would eventually come back in style. But then Oil Rubbed Bronze came on the scene. In addition my antique brass fixture was just not cutting it with my new front door.
Here is the thing. Mr. Bill splurged on this door. He wanted something that would be energy efficient but would also look good.
I love this door.
Our dining room is the first thing you see when you enter the house.
It is immediately to the left of the entry.
We got new chairs.
When the budget recovered, I started looking for a new fixture.
Of course since I was looking and ready to buy, I couldn't find a thing in my price range that I loved.
I decide to give spray paint a try.
I figured that if it didn't work I would expand my search and my budget for the perfect fixture.
We took it down.
It's not too blingy, but it is ugly brass.
I used Rustoleum's Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze.
I hung it on a shepherd's hook to spray paint all sides of the chandelier.
While it was down we added a decorative medallion for the ceiling.
I would love to remove the popcorn.
We had to do some rewiring and I bought new candle covers.
I have always had a mirror on the wall to reflect the chandelier.
It makes for twice the beauty.
I love this chandelier makeover! It was easy and inexpensive.
This is not a hammered finish.
and my sconce.
I think it looks good.
Cost break down:
Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze Metallic $6:98
Ceiling Medallion $19.97
Candle covers pkg of 2 for $1.97. I needed 3 packages.
New bulbs.
A cheap fix for an old fixture.

Thank you, Linda!
DeleteI love your chandelier. I spray everything I can get my hands on as well. Just last night I sprayed a candlestick to look like mercury glass. Spray paint is wonderful, and I have sprayed many ceiling fans too.
ReplyDeleteI have read about that. I should give it a try. I love mercury glass especially at the holidays.
DeleteThank you for stopping by!
I have that exact chandelier and have been building up the nerve to change it. You may have just given me the extra push!!! Thanks. It's really pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love that. I can't wait for you to try it.
DeleteThank you so much for stopping by.
Hi Katie Sue ... Great rich look ... I need to try that paint. Would love to spray paint all my built-in cabinet handles with it ... I have lots ... Mr. Z. says WHY? The old brass is so tarnished and aged but the problem is that they have a ivory ceramic handle in the middle of the brass. Wonder if I could spray paint that too?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, you did a marvelous job on the light fixture.
Blessings.
Audrey Z. @ Timeless Treasures
Thanks, Audrey. I would tape off the porcelain in the middle. I think they would look cute ORB.
