Patriotic Bunting/Ten On The 10th.

Good Morning!
Welcome to Ten on the 10th where 10 (or more) bloggers get together and we all share projects under $10.00.
I want to say a big thank you to Benita from Chasing Quaintness for hosting this month.
If you are coming from Exquisitely Unremarkable, welcome. I'm thrilled you are here.

I was making a new quilt top the other day. I haven't quilted in years and this was supposed to be speed quilting. It was more like a speed trap but that is a post for another day.

When the first rows pieced together, I thought that they would make a charming bunting or banner.
Once the top was pieced, a package of bias tape was unearthed from my sewing stash.

It is absolutely worth the $1.99 that it costs. Since it is cut on the bias or diagonal it's a breeze to sew.
No cutting, piecing or pressing. It's all done for you.

The quilt top was inspired by a Ralph Lauren pillow sham. We've had this for a while but haven't used it in a few years. We had to give the comforter away because it was way too hot for Texas - even in the winter. I do not know what happened to the other sham but since I couldn't find it, the remaining sham got cut up and made into a pillow. Two remnants were used in the bunting.

To make this almost no sew, each of the scraps was cut with pinking shears.

The pocket shaped pennants were placed into the fold of the bias tape, pinned, and then sewn across the top.
I draped it across the mantel.

I really love that this is red, white and blue but the blue isn't a traditional Navy blue.
It's an unexpected and fun twist.

The pennants are pocket shaped but you could easily do rectangles or triangles.

Homemade fabric bunting is an inexpensive and it's a fun, personalized decoration for any celebration.

It's very traditional at the 4th of July.

I didn't spend anything for the fabric pieces since they were remnants but fat quarters would work.
A fat quarter is an 18' by 21' measurement of fabric which is more than enough for a bunting.
I've picked up fat quarters from Walmart but they can also be found at Hobby Lobby and Joann's.
They start at $1.48 each at Walmart.
To keep this under $10.00, get four and then cut each fabric twice.
If getting fabric cut is intimidating, fat quarters are a perfect solution because they are pre-cut for you. You don't have to deal with the cutting line which is especially long at Joann's.

The fabric could be glued into the bias tape if you don't sew but I encourage everyone to learn to sew, however.

I realize that bunting or banners have been a blogger staple for a while. I've even made a few before but I thought the color scheme of this one was different and festive.
Sometimes it's great to go with an old faithful.
Now, hop on over to see Barbara at French Ethereal and then stop in to see the rest of the Ten on the 10th team.
I want to give Stacey of Poofing the Pillows credit for starting this group.
She is missed in the blogging world.

  9. Katie, l love this project. Using fabric swatches for Do it yourself decorations is one of my favorite things. Using the bias tape to attach the fabric pieces was a great idea. The banner looks great on your mantle. Vintage and patriotic at the same time.

  14. Stacy IS missed in the blogging world! I love your bunting and the pinking shears method. Since I've no machine I think I might be one who would glue but you're right -- the stitching gives it such a smooth finish.
