Easy DIY Picture Frame Out Of Lath

Hi Everybody! 

 I am here with a quick project that I did the other day.

 We'd had an old green chalkboard in the garage for several years. 

Joanna Gaines had a similar framed chalkboard in one of her reveals. 

I loved it and I knew we had the stuff on hand to make it.

This frame should have mitered corners if I had better skills.

If Mr. Troll was here it would have mitered corners.

I'll be honest and tell you that I'm not good at miters. 

It takes a lot of caulk to fix my corners.

Geometry - I just don't get it.

 Sometimes a girl has got to do what she's got to do. 

No miters for me. 

I dug out my lath strips. 

  

Lath is a thin wood that was commonly used for plaster walls. 

It can be used for craft project like this.  

I used it for my laundry room board and batten wall. 

Measure your lath and cut it with the saw of your choice. 

Be sure you wear goggles or glasses. 

I got this saw for Bill for his birthday last year. 

It's sort of a gift to myself too. 

I tested several samples of stain. 

Red Mahogany by Minwax ended up being a great mid-tone.

Liquid Nails was a great adhesive for this. 

I glued the lath directly to the chalkboard. 

Bill had an ample supply of these darling mini clamps.

They were perfect.

 

Pinterest was a good resource and I used it to help me with the lettering. 

I knew what I wanted to say but needed help with fonts. 

This is a conglomeration of several artists' fonts. 

This is so cute. 

We have several black chalkboards but this is our first green one.

If you do not want green you could make this with black chalkboard paint.

Paint a piece of wood and frame it with lath.

Diminutive Door

I told you about a trip that Bill and I took to Arkansas this past summer.

We went to Mena, Arkansas.

The architectural salvage store was a pleasant surprise. 

I promised to show you my finds but I'm not sure I did.

One of them was an old door. 

It must have been on a little pump house or shed because it is smaller than a regular door.

It was a little more than I wanted to pay and the glass was broken, so I almost didn't get it. 

Then I realized how silly that would be.

I would have kicked myself all the way back to Texas. 

It still has remnants of original paint and the size is perfect for wall decor. We had some plywood that worked for the opening. Two quick cuts and a coat of chalkboard paint and it was ready to hang. It's taken two months to figure out where to hang it. 

My three dollar shelf display had to go to make a wall for the door.

I've been trying to figure out a message for the chalkboard. 

I thought of the following:

"Door to nowhere."

"Welcome to Narnia"

or 

"I don't know what to say on this chalkboard."

In the end I decided on a picture of a bird similar to one I saw on Pinterest.

One of the shelves fit on the door.

I filled it with some of my favorite items from the old shelves.

A milk glass plate, 

a bank I've had since I was a child

and a picture of me in a playpen at the beach.

We had the shelf display in three houses throughout most of our marriage. I'm not sure we can cope with this new look.

There's some other stuff to show you in this room. 

I'd needed a distraction from all the bad news last week.

Decorating is a great escape.

I'll show the rest of the room in another post.

It's perfect for these transitional fall nights.

Chalkboard Gift Idea

Do you all love chalkboards or is it just me?

I've been putting chalkboards together out of all kinds of picture frames lately. 

I found some frames at Hobby Lobby that I thought had a perfect look and would make a great gift. 

They come in a variety of sizes. 

I like the 5 x 7 and the 8 x 10.

Take out the glass and simply paint the backer board with chalkboard paint.

I give a couple of pieces of chalk with the gift. 

I love the rusticity of these frames. 

I've given this twice and made one for myself. 
This last one was a little bit of a fail.
