The Junky Box

Barn Find, Green Box

I planned to spend most of my cash at the little antique stand at the produce store.

Green's Produce

I fell in love with this perfectly, imperfect green box.

Green Utility box, White Desk, Antique Chair

The vendor at this little shop travels up to the midwest and he digs through barns up there.

Green Farmhouse Style box, Tool box

How fun would that be?

In fact a friend of mine from college invited me up to dig through her husband's barn.

I think she'd love it if I divested her husband of some of his treasures.

Yes, please!

Bill would not be amused, however.
Have you ever been treasure hunting in a barn?

Junkpalooza Day Two

 How are you?
I've been so busy junking that I haven't time to post about day two of Junkpalooza.

103 degrees.
Once it hit 103 degrees, day two of Junkpalooza came to a close.
It was even too hot to take very many photos.
I found some a couple of cute things and a few books.

Day two got off to a late start because we had to wait for the air conditioning man.
The good news is that our upstairs is cooler than it has been all summer.
He was replacing leaky coils and installing another vent for our room.
Yipee.

Our first stop was Arlington Resale.
It is my favorite junk shop.
Maybe I should say Junque Shoppe because it isn't your run of the mill thrift store.
The front room looks like an antique store.
They get great stuff including some of the stuff that I have donated.
Not to brag but they love my stuff.

Things turned a bit dicey when my eagle eye brother spotted one of the chairs I had given them.  I failed to mention to him that Bill and I cleaned out the attic and donated some of my great grandmother's rickety chairs.
Bill and I had come to the sad conclusion that no amount of coaxing would be able to convince any sane person from sitting on these chairs.
They were in the attic waiting for a lake house that may or may not ever happen.
After a moment or two of silence, Dave seemed to understand.
Whew.
Why did my grandmother label all her furniture?

These are my finds from Arlington Resale.

 My affair with green continues.

The tea leaf was only $1.00.
This was my great grandmother Lueke's everyday china.
Ironic since I'd given away two of her chairs.
"Oops" was all Bill had to say.
Dave did not make me buy back my great grandmother's chairs.
Thank goodness.
The thought did cross my mind.

We finished up the awkward moment and headed to J. Gilligan's for Irish Nachos
I highly recommend them.
Get the salad for lunch if that will make you feel better about the calories consumed because of this delicious appetizer.
It's worth it.

Potato skins smothered in cheese with sour cream and jalapenos.
So good.

After lunch we went to Salvation Army.
Then we headed to Thrift Town.
The roads are all torn up so a 2 minute trip took about 15 minutes.

I found the best brass chargers.

There were six of them for $2.99 each.
I wish I'd seen them when it was half off blue week.
I've worked to build up my charger collection.
I didn't have a charger collection until I started blogging.
You can't do a blogger tablescape without chargers.
It's a rule or something.
I'm sure of it.

Dave wanted to visit the pawn shop he frequented in H.S.
I turned the wrong way on to a one way street.
It wasn't a one way street when Dave was in H.S.
Thank heavens for the Methodists because their parking lot saved me from a head on situation.

It was 103 by the time we returned to the car.
We were getting hot and thirsty.  I was a little crabby.
We ran into one more Half Price Books and then headed home to the blissfully cool house.

It was a fun and thrifty day.
I hope you are well.

The Evolution of A Color Crush

When you live in a neutral environment, adding a subtle pop of color keeps interiors from becoming a little stagnant.
I've never been faithful to a color.
I have color obsessions.
I do.
I can't help it.
There might be something wrong with me.

I've recently become re-enamored with green.
This is that story.
We had a hail storm.

It obliterated our cars so I nicknamed them Pimples and Dimples.
Mine was Dimples, of course.

Bill took issue with the fact that I was calling his car Pimples, so I renamed the cars, Mr. and Mrs. Dowlrimple.
There really was a Dowl Rimple
Hilarious.

We got the cars assessed and each received a check from the insurance adjuster.
All was good until more hail storms popped up in the forecast.

More hail meant more damage which meant another deductible.
We already had three deductibles between the cars and the roof.
OUCH.
We did not need any more out of pocket expense.
We cleaned out the garage so we could pull the vehicles in if need be.
As a result we did a little more purging.
The little A Brandt desk turned potting bench had to go.

However, within its storage depths, I found green.
Glorious green flower pots.

Some old and some new but all a colorful inspiration.
I decorated the deck in shades of celery and navy.
It's so pretty while evoking a false sense of cooler temps.

This is Texas, y'all.
Ain't nothing cool about it.
This in turn caused a plethora of Pinterest searches all with green as the catalyst. (Please, follow me on Pinterest and on my other social media sites.)

I went to see "Wicked"
Gorgeous!

I decked out the living room in green glass.
I'm telling you.
I don't have that many hidey holes around here any more but I systematically ferreted out anything and everything green.
The other day I remembered something else.
Buried in the bowels of the kitchen island was a marvelous green bowl.

A green so sublime that it spurred a flip flop of the niches in the kitchen.
I know.
I just did them 4 weeks ago.
I hunted and gathered as many glorious green accoutrements as I could find.
I headed to the antique mall for more.
I scouted and scoured until I found an assortment of chotchkies.
I'm having a color crush right now.

Can you even?

I didn't spend much but found some darling examples of vintage kitchen accessories.

Love!

Dear Miss Red.
It's not you.
It's me.
I can't be faithful to a color.
I've tried.
I just need more out of life.
You came on too strong.
I'm not ready.

You can join your friends:

Again, I'm so sorry.
 Until we meet again.

Going Green

I'm not sure if it is because I just went and saw "Wicked", but I have been so inspired by green lately.

I started a Pinterest board the other night.
You can see it here.
I typed green into the search bar and oodles of inspiration popped up.

Drop dead gorgeous images depicting luscious green.
One of the first to catch my eye was an image of green glass.

It just so happens that the green glass collection made the cut when we did a recent purge of some of our belongings.

I got it out and started playing with it on Wednesday.

There is already a touch of green in the room because of the stained glass.

Such a gorgeous color. Perfect for this time of year when the young leaves are bright green on the trees just budding out for spring.
Thanks for reading!
Have a great day.

Layering a Bedroom With Color

Jonnie moved back in for a spell last year.
The room was a blank slate when he moved out in May.

I scraped the popcorn from the ceiling, touched up the wall color and bought two white valances from Walmart.
I thought about going with yellow for an accent color but that would require spending money.
Shopping the house was a better option because I just didn't want to spend any money in here.
After some contemplation, this vintage painting set the tone for the room.

Even though it is damaged, I love this painting.

 The room needed a lamp.

Bill got the lamp for me for my birthday quite a few years ago. We found it at Hobby Lobby.

In order to bring color to the all white bedding, I brought green accent pillows up from the garden room. The quilt came from my grandmother. I found it in the attic as a teenager and took it to college with me. I believe it is from the 1930s based on the color scheme.
The final touch is a little needlepoint pillow stitched by my mom. It was a chair cover that got damaged along the edges after so many years of use. I freshened it up by making it into a pillow.

My great grandfather made the bed for my mom when she was a little girl and it's my favorite thing in the house.

I draped another green quilt from the same era over my garage sale chair.  The tin barn came from the thrift store last year.
The tea table came from my grandparent's house. The ice cream table tucked underneath belonged to my brothers and I as children.

Bill and I got the armoire at an auction. It is a tad big in here but Bill has vowed that he will never move this piece again. Getting bonked in the head with the bonnet top was probably the last straw so I guess I'll have to hire someone to help me move it if it ever gets relocated.
It has the best storage of anything I've ever seen so it makes up for the fact that this house has terrible linen closets.
I love the spool organizer with the antique quilts.
The colors of the different spools mirror the colors on the quilt.

The antique horse prints were on the gallery wall in the hall coming up the stairs. They didn't get put back up after painting the stairwell.

After 21 years they needed a new locale and this room is perfect. We made the coat rack for the boys when they were little.

The cosmetic case came from a garage sale eons ago.
I used it (and got made fun of) for many years but I love it. The tin sand pail was a recent antique store find. I've wanted one forever and finally found one at a price I was willing to pay.

The dresser was my first antique. I took the plunge and painted it white last spring. It has such cute lines and I'm crazy about the way that it recedes into the wall making the room look a little bigger.
I can't quite figure out which mirror I like best so I'm still playing.

There you have it. When I decorate a space, I start with a blank canvas and then shop the house for anything in a color scheme.
I layer it in and then decide when to stop.
The trick is not hiding stuff from yourself when shopping the house. I used to stash stuff everywhere but lately I've worked harder to be a little more intentional and organized about where I'm stashing decor items.

This room has always been one of my favorite rooms in the house because it has beautiful light throughout the day.
Thanks for stopping in our little guest room.
Look at my Great Guest Rooms board on Pinterest.

I love it decorated in shades of green.
