The One Best Thing For A Compulsive Decorator

I'm so glad that I learned how to sew.

It isn't hard.
The hardest part is learning how to thread the machine.

I've been able to do so many things to our homes because I learned that skill.

It is the skill I've used the most for decorating.

You can pick up a sewing machine at a thrift store for not very much money.

My current machine is a New Home from the 80s.

It was only $25.00.

I don't think it had been used much at all and it sews like a charm.

So, what do you think?

Are you ready to give sewing a try?

  1. I got a new sewing machine for Christmas about 3 years ago. Never have used it...for some reason I'm intimidated. My son has used it to sew costumers though. :)

  2. Such an inspiring post. I remember my mom always made my clothes growing up. I took Homemaking in the 6th grade which consisted half of the year cooking and the other half sewing. My mother had previously started teaching me to sew and I always remember not understanding the directions from the patterns so she would show me all the time (I have always been a more visual person). Eventually when I got it down, she said "now I can stop making your clothes and you can make your own and I will buy you all the material." I am so glad she taught me, because it has come in handy throughout the years. It is almost like riding a bike...once you learn it, you never forget! Advice for those just learning, "Just be patient, practice a lot...and you will get it"

  3. I wish I knew how to sew, Katie! I hope it's not a dying art, but I never really learned more than the basics. My grandmother was an expert seamstress, and I think she taught me a few things. I only wish that I still had her Singer sewing machine - it would be an antique now. Thanks for linking up at Best of the Weekend!

  5. Amen, amen and again I say Amen!!!! Sewing is the single most important skill a homemaker can have!! If anyone thinks they cannot sew, it is because the have not tried. My favorite and most used machine is nearly 50 years old, made of cast iron, and if I asked it to, I believe that it would cook supper!!!! I have made everything from christening gowns to bimini boat covers!! That's not to say that I sew all the time, but when I decide a room needs new drapes/table covers/pillows...you name it, it's nice to be able to make exactly what I am picturing in my mind!!
Thanks for a great post...lovely rooms, and one birdy pillow that is calling my name! I just have to find a graphic :^)
    Blessings to you,
    J
