Fresh Paint On The Shed

Hi, Friends, 

How are you? I hope that you are well.

I wanted to take a minute to thank you for all your comments and kind words. It means so much to me and it is one of the reasons that I keep blogging. I know that some of you are such loyal followers and it is because we share a bond that has formed over the last decade.

 It is hard to believe that I've blogged almost ten years. 

In that decade, the shed has been three different colors. 

I was in the midst of raising teenagers when I let Bill choose a color combination. 

He was going for a Craftsman era look. 

In 2015 the shed got a red barn makeover. 

It needed a fresh coat of paint especially after the recent deck refinishing project. It had started to fade so it almost looked pink. 

I love the color of the cabin out in East Texas so much. I realized that there was plenty of paint left to give our shed a coat or two. 

I adore this color. 

It is Retreat by Sherwin Williams. 

It is a very soft, smoky green.

It does feel like the shed visually retreats into the landscape. 

Texas is so hot in the summer. The green will feel cooler than the red.  

This green will coordinate will all my deck color combinations as well. 

Usually, the cushions are black but occasionally I'll switch them for Navy blue.  

I love blue and green together. Black and green is one of my favorite color combinations for the deck. 

I made some new fall pillows for the deck chairs. 

Stencils were used for the lettering, the checkered border, and the truck. Pumpkins are pretty easy to paint so those were done free handed. I searched the internet for pillow ideas and decided to make them rather than buy them. 

Bill rarely uses the shed so I'm embracing it as the "she shed". 

The inside was refreshed last year but it needs a good cleaning after a long growing season. 

I'll tackle that next week. 

We've enjoyed the pumpkins and mums out here. 

It was very hot the day that the shed got painted red. I remember vowing to never paint it again. 

Actually, it must have been the trim that was a nightmare because it only took a few hours to paint the body of the shed today.  

The white trim needs a touch up too but I don't have that paint on hand so that will have to wait for another day. 

The little wooden truck came from Walmart a few years ago. It was red but green aligns with my color palette a little better. Most of our red truck decor has been painted. 

The little lantern was red too. It was a target find a long time ago.

 

One thing always seems to lead to another. 

The retaining wall got replaced which caused me to move the greenhouse.  I noticed how bad the deck looked so it needed to be stained. The deck project highlighted that the shed needed some paint. 

The deck needed to recover a bit from stripping and power washing. The new wood needs to age a little too. That project will be coming soon. 

My containers are full of lettuce, kale, mustard greens, and other winter vegetables. 

They should be fine this winter unless we have some sort of "Uri like" event. 

It all looks so pretty and it is finally cool outside!  

Friday Night Lights can finally have some fall weather.

A Deer Blind To Potting Shed Transformation

I thought I'd share a remarkable transformation. When we closed on the house out in East Texas, we found an interesting collection of deer blinds. The former owner's son was clearly a fan of deer hunting. 

We are not fans of deer hunting. I'm not disparaging the sport by any means, it's just not something that Bill grew up doing nor has he showed any interest in it whatsoever. 

Three of the blinds were back in the woods but one had been pulled up to the yard. 

We were under the impression that the blind would be gone shortly after closing. It wasn't. 

Two or three weeks went by and the blind was still there. 

Bill wanted to haul it to the dump. 

I began to get a vision for its transformation. 

It wasn't big enough to be a green house but I thought it'd be a good place to store flower pots and gardening tools. 

Here is what it looked like the day we saw the house for a second time. 

Bill pulled some raggedy burlap off of the window openings. He also took care of some decaying wood on the sides. 

It was gross inside. 

This is how it sat for several months while we worked on other projects.

 

I knew it was facing the wrong way. The door needed to be on the south side instead of facing west. So, one drizzly Saturday morning, Bill chained it to the back of the truck and we turned it around. It was so much fun. We went to a local antique/junk store to find some windows. 

Last weekend, we were in the cabin doing some demo. I stepped outside and it was at that point that I noticed that my pine trees were no longer green. They were rust. (It is too early to tell whether the trees will recover.)  I felt the need to bring order out of chaos since I could do nothing about the pine trees and the issues in the cabin were more severe than I anticipated.  

The urge to bring beauty out of the ugly became overwhelming. 

I looked at that deer blind and went to work. 

I grabbed some white paint out of the shed/shop. 

I started painting the wood slats and the door. A couple of swipes across the red corrugated metal told me that it needed to be taken off. 

 The old shutters from the main house were dismantled and cut down for the sides. 

This past weekend, while I painted the cabin, Bill took off some weird trim pieces and he installed two old chippy windows. 

Even though my hands were tired from painting the cabin, I wanted to finish painting the little potting shed. 

Once the paint was dry, the shed got a bit of styling. 

The wreath was made from grapevine pulled from the woods. 

A Hobby Lobby bracket is a stand in for gingerbread trim. 

The white wire planter box is really part of a closet component from IKEA. 

One of the windows has perfect chippy dark green paint. 

The other window has a some celery paint showing through the white. 

I love that. 

Bill did a great job with the windows. 

I don't know if this will survive another move but it would look so cute inside my future vegetable garden.

I told Bill that it would be like the shed in Mr. McGregor's garden.

"Who is Mr. McGregor?" 

???

I stared at him over the top of my glasses but finally told him.  

"My parent's didn't read to me when I was a kid." 

He's worked from home for 11 months. I stare at him from over the top of my glasses sometimes.

Big, Red Barn-Okay, Not So Big

Once we set up our little pool in the backyard, I started spending more and more time out in the back yard. 

The views from the pool were important to me. 

My view of the shed was a little uninspiring. 

I added a few cute things to the wall but I didn't love the color. 

Bill picked it the last time. 
I must have been drugged because I don't know why I let this scheme get passed me. 

It wasn't the focal point that it could be.

I'd been on Pinterest looking at pictures of gorgeous barns. 

I knew red was the direction I wanted to go and he was fine with it. 

He is usually up for anything as long as he doesn't have to paint. Bill hates painting. 
I figured that barn red would be an easy color to find. 
I thought it might even be available premixed.
Nobody had a grab and go can of red. 

We got this red at Home Depot. 

We usually get our paint at Sherwin Williams but their air conditioning was out. They couldn't find our white in the system and they had a sale starting the next day. 

It wore me out just standing in the store, so we left. 
They lost the sale.  

When I opened the can of paint and brushed some on, it looked pink. 

I started to panic a little but decided to let it dry before I had a freak out. It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but this wasn't exactly a cheap can of paint.
Behr paint and primer together was about $39.00 a can.
The color is Bolero.  

The red paint went on pretty quick. The white trim was going to take a while.

I tried to stay under the umbrella but even with that and sunscreen, I was worried I'd get burned. I didn't. 

I finished the easy side first.  

I finished my focal wall. 

The front took forever. 

It didn't help that I was dodging the wasps that have made a home up in the left eave. 

Any paint spatter that you see on the deck is a direct result of me running from a wasp. 

I didn't get stung. 

It looks so cute. 
I can't wait to stack a few pumpkins and mums in front in the fall.
It should look great at Christmas. 
We still have to do some work to the hardware and then I'll stage it and take some photos.
Our not so big, red barn is adorable.
